Petition Letter: To the Associate Dean (Studies)
I am appealing for credit standing for STAT 263 (Winter, 2019).
I had three exams in three days at the start of my exam season, the third being my statistics exam. In the first two exams I had been having issues with my hand which increased in severity the longer I wrote. These issues came in the form of a sharp nerve pain upon moving my thumb on my writing hand after it had been flexed, and a numbness and weakness in that hand following the nerve pain. This would happen several times during my exams, but I was able to complete my first two exams before I ran out of time. On my statistics exam I was not close to finishing by the time the exam was over, and I believe that this was due to the issues with my hand. If I had known this were an issue before my exam season started, I would have gotten accommodations, but the issue only presents itself after a considerable amount of time spent writing. I had my last two exams on the same day, and after the first one my hand was in a considerable amount of pain, so I deferred my final (CHEM 282) to next September. Upon returning to Victoria, I saw my doctor and explained the symptoms. He has provided some documentation. I will be filing for accommodations shortly to ensure that this issue does not impact another exam in the future. I am only appealing this course as it was the only one in which I did not finish the exam due to having to work around my hand issues. I did not drop the course earlier as I did not know that this would be a problem on the final exam, and because I had been doing very well in the weekly assignments. My circumstances will not be an issue until next exam season, which I will have accommodations for.
My plan is to receive accommodations for either extra time on my written exams, or the ability to write on a computer. This issue only presents during extensive writing, so my other academic duties are not impacted. Once I return to Kingston, I will be seeing a physiotherapist. This is now a know issue and if it impairs my exam writing further it will be my own fault for not planning around it.
