I am writing to appeal my probationary period, and request that I may continue to my 3rd year Bachelor of Science studies in Statistics.
During my probationary year I have improved my GPA, despite failing math 281. My first semester GPA was 1.74, and my second semester GPA was 1.78. This is a marked improvement from first year, when my GPA was 1.33 for both terms. Transitioning from high-school to first year university and living in residence proved to be more difficult than I had expected. I am an organized person by nature, who always schedules and follows through with daily homework and course reviews. This transition process experience led me to change a few things for my probationary second year. I lived at home which helped me maintain a consistent routine, and quiet place away from campus to study more effectively. As well, I took fewer courses in second year and found having four instead of five courses per term worked better for me. I was able to achieve in the B range for the first time.
Reflecting on my experience with Math 281, I realize that I didn't always know what I did not know. The course content is intense. I did consult before midterm with recent graduate Ian Chew, but realize I should have talked to him sooner. Since I was doing relatively well on the homework assignments, I feel I was misled into feeling more confident to face the intensity of challenge presented on both the midterm and final exams. The homework assignments accounted for very little weighting in the course, and did not provide the feedback I needed, nor were consistent with the exam in intensity. It takes time to learn how to navigate the university system and I feel my plan for next year will show I can do it more effectively.
I appreciate your consideration of my appeal. I would be happy to add to my plan anything additional you deem critical to my success.

Academic Plan
Academic Plan: My plan is to review my Math 281 exam, which I have done. I feel I now know better how to achieve better in the course. I have petitioned Mr.Mingo to look at it as well, and the feedback for my next step is to retake Math 281. It is a core course whether I stay as a mathematics major or switch my major to statistics. I want to switch to Statistics as it involves more of the type of math I want to do post degree.
This school year, I will enlist a tutor from the start of the term, as well as regularly consult with my Teaching Assistant outside Tutorials during office hours so I can ensure my level of understanding and execution. I have already connected with an academic advisor, Karen Scanlon, with whom I plan to check in on a regular basis with appointments scheduled at midterm and the end of each term. In this way, together we will be able to tweak strategies if need be at critical points as well as evaluate options and next best steps based on results. I will continue to take four courses a term rather than five to ensure my course load is manageable. I intend to switch my major to statistics and will take stat 351, stat 353, stat 361, Math 311, Math 339, and my electives (two). These courses are loaded in my plan on my Solus.
