Petition Letter
Petition Letter: To the Associate Dean of Studies,
I am applying for an appeal to have my Physics 117 course dropped and possibly my marks in the D range changed to CR in order to improve my GPA. I would like to stay in the Honours program as I plan on continuing into Graduate studies. During this past school year my marks have greatly suffered due to an on-going medical situation. I was unaware that I was taking too strong of a dosage of my thyroid medication. I am on thyroid medication because in high school I was diagnosed with and underwent treatment for thyroid cancer, and I am still working with my endocrinologist to find the right dosage of medication to take. I had an appointment with my endocrinologist on May 16 and discovered that the prescription I had been taking since November 2018, after my last appointment in October had been much too high. This put my T4 and TSH levels very high, way out of the normal range. Dr. Sawka informed me that this causes a loss of ability to focus and retain information as well as an increase in emotional responses to situations. I had been warned to watch for low dosage which would have been symptoms of being tired and lethargic. I didn¿¿t have these symptoms and seemed to have excess energy, so I thought everything was alright. I was not aware of the symptoms of the medication being too strong until visiting the doctor May 16. This all means that during the second semester of this past school year I struggled to study for extended periods of time or listen to entire lectures which is very out of character for me. Taking notes was also very difficult. In the past this had not been an issue because I had appointments with my endocrinologist every few months so my levels could be regularly measured, and the dosage appropriately changed. From my appointment in October until my appointment in May was the longest period of time I had gone without these needed adjustments and is why my second semester was affected much more than the first.
In order to fix this and prevent it from happening again I am obviously more aware of the side effects of my levels being off and I am scheduling more frequent appointments with my endocrinologist to more closely monitor my levels and ensure my medication is properly adjusted.
Thank you for taking my ongoing health situation into consideration for this appeal.
Sincerely,
Abigail Koop
