Petition Letter: Dear Associate Dean (Studies),
I am writing to appeal for a late drop of my MATH 112 class this past winter term. Over the past year, I have been struggling with symptoms of both anxiety and depression, though within the last term they grew to be unmanageable. My health was in serious decline because, at my worst, I wouldn't eat or leave my bed, and thus so many things in my life unfortunately fell to the side, including my studies. Because I struggled to leave my apartment most days, this affected MATH 112, which is an in-person test based class, worse than my other classes. In addition to missing almost every class, I also missed two of the tests, each worth 15 percent of the overall grade, due to my symptoms. The other two classes I took this term were more assignment/homework based, which is why I was able to complete them from home, albeit with much lower marks than I would have hoped. In order to try to help myself by reducing my responsibilities, I decided to drop two of my classes this term, leaving the other three as to remain a full time student.
I spoke to the on-campus councillors over the course of the term, and they helped me with exercises that allowed me to maintain passing grades in those two classes, but unfortunately my lack of participation in MATH 112 stopped me from completing it. I fully intend to retake this class next year, I only ask for the late drop because I failed the class due to my issues with my health, which to my knowledge should reasonably count as extenuating circumstances.
Now that I am living back at home with my parents for the summer, I am beginning a program of Cognitive Behavioural Therapy, in order to both make myself healthy again, and to make sure that this never happens again. I look forward to doing the good work that I am capable of in my academic career, once I am back at Queens in the fall. I've attached a medical note I obtained from my family doctor that confirms my health issues preventing me from working this term. Though it is vague, my doctor felt that the information provided should be adequate. I also have an appointment with a psychologist for a formal assessment in a couple weeks who will be able to provide additional documentation if necessary, in an amendment to this appeal.
Thank you for your understanding,
Jake Halay
