To The Associate Dean, I am appealing to add the course BCHM 218 (Summer, 2019).
It is with great sadness that I inform you of the passing of a very close family friend of mine. He had passed away very shockingly on Monday, April 17th, 2019. However, I was informed of the passing on April 28th due to my parents wanting me to focus on my exams without being terribly distracted. My parents also did not want me to postpone my 5 exams as I was already under a lot of stress. The funeral took place very quickly after on May 4th and I was asked to make a slideshow and organize a speech celebrating his life within this time frame. I was extremely disheartened as this person was heavily involved throughout my childhood and was essentially a family member and role model to me. In addition, I was very preoccupied trying to organize the slideshow and speech before May 4th, 2019 that I felt I had no time to process what had just happened. Therefore, after May 4th, 2019 I felt I needed time to grieve and get in the right headspace before I could focus on a summer course.
It has now been more than 2 weeks since the funeral on May 4th and I have had a lot of time to reflect and gain ample support from family and friends. I feel I am now ready to enroll in this course and put in all of my effort to succeed. Enrolling in this course means a great deal to me because it is a prerequisite for multiple courses that I intend to take next year to complete my degree within a 4-year time frame. I am very motivated and believe I can stay on track with my work as I also have a tutor set up 2 hours every week to help me with course content. In addition, I have decided to not work during the months May-July in order to purely focus on this course without getting distracted. I have also created a thorough academic plan to help me stay on track with the readings and course load. Overall my circumstances have definitely improved, and I am managing my feelings by regularly speaking with family and friends. Therefore, I greatly believe this matter affecting me will not have a significant or detrimental effect on my future academic performance.

Work Load Schedule:
Students are expected to spend on average 108 hrs/term on this course. I have created a very detailed schedule that I plan on following throughout this course. In order to help me with the work load and understand concepts I have scheduled a tutor for 2 hours every week. In addition, I have scheduled additional tutor sessions to help me with time management and preparation for the midterm and exams. Lastly, I also have illustrated in great detail the amount of time I need to dedicate to readings and course modules. I have attached this calendar schedule with the additional documents in this appeal.
Strategies for Success: Although the lectures will provide the bulk of the course content, I plan to take an active role in my learning. The approach to succeed in this course should be more than just memorizing molecular biological elements and concepts, but to strive to understand how experiments designed to comprehend them are done and why they are done that way. Each week I am expected to read the assigned readings and plan to ask any questions on any aspect about the lectures. In addition, research into other papers/books or websites should help with my studying, and more importantly help strengthen my independent learning skills. I also plan on interacting and discussing the material with classmates and, where possible, will attempt to facilitate group- based learning in tutorials to improve my understanding of the material.
What to focus on in each module section:
Section 1: What are the properties and interactions of genetic information molecules Section 2: How are genomes organized and protected, and how can they be studied Section 3: How do organisms copy and edit genomes
Section 4: What are different ways that organisms regulate gene expression
During the week leading up to the exam make sure I understand these concepts thoroughly:
1. explain how biomolecules (DNA, RNA, protein) function and interact to support life;
2. critically assess primary research articles that address current problems and questions in
biomedical and molecular sciences;
3. apply research-based theories to solve problems related to biochemistry and molecular biology;
4. use simulations and computer-based multimedia to model and mimic the behavior of
biomolecules when conditions can be controlled in an in vitro-type experimental situation, and
within the context of simulated cells; and
5. collaborate with peers through problem-based learning activities and peer review to analyze and
solve case studies related to course content, and to articulate clear solutions to these problems individually and as a group.
