Dear Dr. Stephenson,
My name is Reynelle Hadassah Isadora Richards-James, a first year BSC. student with a goal to enter the field of Medicine in the foreseeable future. I grew up in a household of non-Francophone but graduated with a Bilingual French Diploma and an Ontario Scholar. With a strong desire to join the field of Pediatric medicine since Elementary School, and a strong/mentor by Dr. Georges Azzie, MD, Staff Surgeon, General and Thoracic Surgeon at Sick Kids Hospital, my consistent voluntary work at Holland BloorView Children¿¿s rehabilitation Hospital, Lakeridge hospital in Ajax and CNIB, provides the exposure and opportunity to serve the community. I followed in the footsteps of my Sister who graduated from Queens Life Science program. I came to Queens on a 4-year academic scholarship and with extremely high expectations of myself to succeed in my studies. I am the third and last child of a single sole supporting parent. I dedicated all my efforts and applied strong time management and organizational skills to achieve my goals to proceed to the next program level for 2nd year and beyond.
Appeal for Credit Standing: Math 121 and Phys. 117.
I am faced with a challenge where I am unable to get into my planned program of LISC, BIO or CHEM for upper year (2nd year) due to my current GPA. My desired choices are 1. Life-science, 2. Biology and 3. Chemistry. My GPA standing for Fall 2018 Term was at a 3.350 which demonstrated my ability to succeed. I went into the Winter term final exams with good grades and expected to be successful, however; my cumulative GPA is 1.850 which is a great disappointment and with no real future. I am on the pending list only for Bio and a lost of scholarship.
What happened: I know I wasn¿¿t feeling well over the last few months leading up to the exams, but I just kept plugging away. I¿¿ve never missed a lecture except for one time in February when I succumbed to my physical ailment and ended up in my classmate¿¿s dorm where I vomited all over her floor and she along with her Mom who is a Nurse provided medical assistance over the phone. I should have gone to the hospital, but I didn¿¿t. I did try hard to remedy the situation leading up to the exam. I am aware that I am limited to what I can eat at the Dining halls, but it¿¿s been a very difficult time. I know that the food contributes to my condition and I have special dietary needs. It is a monthly condition which I suffered with during High School but at home I was able to manage the situation through diet and despite the various types of allergies from which I suffer, I tried my best to manage my selections from the on-campus menu, which was a difficult task.
The Impact on my studies: I wasn¿¿t feeling well during the weeks leading up to the Winter exams, but I was determined not to allow my situation to prevent me from pulling through. I suffered physical illness which contributed to issues such as lethargy and dizziness (possible endometria) because of my monthly female occurrences. At times, I just didn¿¿t eat because my allergies and other foods increased the level of physical inflammation.
I prepared well for the final exams including paying for supplemental study sessions. I am a hard working, dedicated and conscientious student. My only extra curricular activities were QDC and the Gym, otherwise I go from lectures back to my dorm to do my work and study.
Future
I intend to take care of my physical health which will enable me to excel as I have done in the past and can do so. Over the summer months, I plan on having regular monitoring with my health care provider; but most importantly I know how to manage my diet, because this contributes to the improvement of my condition which will enable me to function better when I¿¿m healthy for a better outcome. Since I¿¿ll be off campus, I will be able to manage my diet /allergies.
In closing, I know my capabilities and I am confident if given the opportunity to enroll in my desired major, I will be successful.
