Petition Letter

Petition Letter: Dear Associate Dean of studies,

I am appealing to have three courses dropped after the academic deadline. Over the past year and a half I have been struggling issues regarding depression and my mental health that were beyond my control. Due these circumstances, In the fall of 2018 my academic performance was very negatively effected. I was unable to get out of bed most days and my motivation to do simple daily tasks was highly impaired. In particular around November 2018 my health mental took a turn for the worst, my mood was unpredictable and made focussing on school very difficult. I did seek help from student wellness services for counselling and medication (which they gave the wrong dosage) throughout the fall, however none of which seemed to help much (since they were booking students appointments so far apart and I needed to see a councillor more often). By the time the winter semester came around my conditions made it so that I was beyond caring about myself let alone my studies (thus why I did not apply for the appeal sooner because I did not have any hope/motivation to try anything). So in the winter semester I tried to keep going because I did not know what to do could not get sufficient help from student wellness and I did not have the money to fund my own therapy. To further express the severity of my circumstance I have chosen to include (but please keep confidential) that I ended up at Lakeridge Health centre in Oshawa in February for a failed suicide attempt. The doctor in the hospital provided me with correct dosages of my medication and suggested I go to the ITTP rehabilitation program in KGH (which I attended) and that I see a therapist (which I am) regularly. In the fall I plan on taking it slow based on the advise from my faculty by taking two courses in the fall and two in the winter with tutoring and the correct mental health care. I have gotten student wellness services to provide you with proof of my counselling and treatments in the fall semester, I have given them permission for you to access any further information regarding this matter. I apologize for this being so late after the deadline but it has been a long road to getting back to normality again and I truly hope that this letter and supporting documentation will be enough to appeal my case.

Thank you in advance,
Mary Morrison
