Petition Letter: To whom it may concern,
This past year at Queen¿¿s has truly taught me many things. It has developed myself as a person and these improvements are not limited to schoolwork, but also as a man in society. With that said, regrettably, it has come to my attention that I have been required to withdraw for 1 year due to my final grades. My poor performance academically has truly let my family down, but I am the one most disappointed with the results. I understand that protocol states that I withdraw for a year and upon return, I provide an academic plan to better ensure my success going forward. I am writing to you because I genuinely believe that one year from now I will be sending a similar academic plan. I understand that the year is used to take a step back, have a breather, and re-evaluate my plans going forward; however, I believe that with some changes that I will list below, I will be able to succeed academically. I believe that I did not make the most of the resources available to me. The resources on campus as well as workshops that are offered should be great learning experiences for me and I believe that I never took full advantage of these. By attending these and making the most of them, I¿¿ll be better equipped to succeed. I also plan on taking 3 courses a semester to lighten my course load minimizing my stress and anxiety levels and at the same time still remaining as a full time student. With that said, I also plan on implementing new study habits for this next year as well as changing where I do school work. According to the academic probation regulations at Queen¿¿s, I am required to finish with a 1.6 cumulative gpa to withdraw from academic probation. With that said, my goal is to achieve a 2.3 cumulative gpa and if I diligently keep myself on track with the objectives listed above, I believe this is a very realistic goal. I know that I am supposed to only appeal if there are extenuating circumstances, and that this all may seem like they are lofty ambitions, but I believe that this is very doable with some slight changes. If you look at my 2018 fall term for last year, my term gpa was at a 2.050. I believe that although my cumulative gpa did not surpass 1.6, this fall term can be used to form a basis towards my academic success, and by implementing the above decisions throughout the semester, I will be able to achieve my goal of a 2.3 gpa since I know that I have the capabilities to improve and do so. I believe that the evidence and plan that I have provided should give you enough insight to see my situation from my standpoint; enough to the point where I can get my requirement to withdraw revoked for this upcoming school year because I wholeheartedly believe that if I make the most of what is provided for me and the resources that I have recently discovered, I will be able to succeed and I pray that you may see it from this standpoint as well. Thank you for taking your time to review my current situation.
Respectfully yours,
Steven Mai

Academic Plan
Academic Plan: For my academic plan, I plan on progressing slowly, but steadily. I plan on taking GPHY 243, GPHY 247, GPHY 207, GPHY 310, GPHY 312, and GPHY 320. I believe that these classes best suit my specific sets of skills and that they will also prepare me for my future plan going forward (geared towards physical geography and GIS). I believe that by taking a reduced course load, and only taking courses that pertain to what I am interested in, I will be able to perform significantly better since it is material that I enjoy learning as well as a lighter course load which should minimize my stress. I believe that following my plan listed in my appeal, I will be able to perform well across these courses and at the end of this upcoming year, I plan on applying to enter the GIS certificate program. If all goes well, I will continue on and take GIS related courses as well as BSC GPHY courses and hopefully be able to bring my GPA up above a 2.7 so I can apply to switch into the BSCH program. This is my immediate 2 year plan and my third year will be a year where I take my final courses needed to graduate with a BSCH in Geography and a certificate in GIS. This is my 3 year plan and may change based on the courses offered each year but it can act as a foundation for my 3 year plan.
