Dear Dr. Stephenson
Please accept this submission to appeal a requirement to withdraw from my studies at Queen¿¿s for a minimum of three years, effective May 21, 2019. I hope that you will consider my case favourably since it has been an honour to study at Queens, and I believe my 1.77 overall average during the year 2018 -2019 proves that I have already initiated and implemented an improved academic plan.
After a recent discussion with my Academic Advisor Karen, I became aware that the mark from my December final exam in History 121 was not entered; therefore, my present GPA is actually higher than it appears. This will be rectified in the coming weeks.
I have addressed the extenuating health circumstances that led to a one-year academic probation in 2017-2018 by following my physician¿¿s recommendations. I did not appeal that probationary period because I realized that I would benefit from the time to address my issues, even though I felt that my academic performance had been significantly affected by extenuating circumstances beyond my control, and I had submitted supporting documentation to verify the timeline and severity of these extenuating circumstances to my academic advisor.
As a result of my improved mental and physical health, along with enhanced study habits and strategies for success, I believe that I have successfully upheld the academic standards of this esteemed institution this year. I implore you to allow me the opportunity to continue to do so as I complete my degree in the Faculty of Arts and Science.
Though I understand that assessment of academic standing is made solely on the basis of the cumulative GPA, I submit that my GPA was adversely affected by the extenuating circumstances during the 2016¿¿2017 school year. Since the Academic Regulations for the Faculty of Arts and Science are designed to ensure that all students are treated fairly and equitably, I suggest that it would be fair to allow me to pursue my degree without interruption now that I have shown a marked improvement in my grades.
The Academic Regulations state, ¿¿In order for such an appeal to succeed, there must be convincing evidence that the circumstances that affected the student¿¿s academic performance will be resolved within a reasonable timeline, or will be appropriately managed on an ongoing basis.¿ I hope you agree that my academic performance in 2018-2019 is, indeed, convincing evidence that any extenuating circumstances that affected my performance in the past have been resolved.
The appeal process is available to reconsider the suitability of sanctions or penalties imposed upon a student in light of information brought forward by the student. I respectfully submit that I have constructively addressed any extenuating circumstances from past years, I have already been following an improved academic plan with effective results, and I am deserving of the opportunity to continue my studies in the fall.

My Academic Plan for 2019-2020 is to follow the learning strategies that I adopted during this past year, which resulted in a much-improved outcome. When returning to school, I will continue to take on a full course load in Arts and Science. As demonstrated, I am able to manage five courses per term. With my B+ in Introduction to Cognitive Science, I believe that Psychology remains an excellent choice as my Major. I achieved a grade of A- in Social Determinants of Health, so it is clear that this is a special area of interest for me. I found the material in these courses particularly interesting, and higher marks were an incentive to work even harder. I plan to carry this motivation with me during the remainder of my academic career and to excel in all of my courses during my next semester in university.
In order to improve my GPA, I will retake some of the courses that I was not able to complete to the best of my ability in previous years, including Hist244, Hist 246, and GEOL102. Over the past year, I feel that I have gained the necessary skills and ability to manage my time wisely, as well as study effectively for exams and tests.
Through reflection, I have found that I am able to maximize my success when I block out a specific time for readings, assignments, etc. In order to continue on this path, I will create timetables to keep me on track in my courses. This plan has worked for me this year, and I feel that I am now in a position to achieve good academic results.
