Petition Letter: To Whom It May Concern:
My name is Amanda Douglas and I am seeking to appeal for Aegrotat standing. I was referred by one of my fourth year professors, Fiona Kay, to an academic advisor who directed me towards this appeal option, as she believed I would greatly benefit from this to assist with my current situation. The reason that I am requiring academic assistance is due to the fact that I have had to spend the large portion of this semester outside of Kingston at home to take care of my young cousins. Their mother has incredibly severe Obsessive Compulsive Disorder to the extent that she cannot be left alone with her own children. She refuses to see any sort of professional to help her, and it is because of this that my uncle is attempting to separate from her as it is clearly having detrimental affects on the psychological health of his kids. She is currently living with her parents and my uncle has been left alone with his young daughters. He works at Fedex and so his working hours are extremely long and unusual. This is why I have been living in and out of their house for the majority of the semester, as I have had to be responsible for the girls. My brother would look after the girls whenever I was unable to, however, he has what is called Achromatopsia, meaning that he is legally blind, so unfortunately it was too difficult for him because he could not drive the girls to any of the places that they needed to be. Through all of this, I have already successfully completed much of my schoolwork as I am enrolled in some online courses. The two courses that I have had a greater deal of difficulty completing, however, would be SOCY457 and SOCY306 as they are not online and required my physical presence for marks. I will have completed over 60 of each of these courses by the end of the semester, however, there are two areas in these courses that I was unable to receive marks for due to my extenuating circumstances.
In terms of timelines, in SOCY457, I was supposed to make a presentation worth 10 in class on Monday November 24th, 2014 and could not make it back to Kingston. Both of these classes give out 15 of the final marks for class participation in the tutorials, this is the other area that I was unable to receive marks for as I was unable to be present during many of these times. The first time that I was needed at home was September 22nd, which was week three. I took care of the girls for the next four weeks and returned to school on October 21st where I was able to attend my classes until I was called back home on the 24th, because we realized that my brother wasn¿¿t able to fulfill the duties required. I was then home for the remainder of the semester. Thankfully, I am in two online courses and I have had little difficulty completing all the work required for these courses. The issue that I have had has been with my ability to be physically present. I have been lucky enough to be in courses that are largely based on online submissions so that has been a massive help, however, my inability to attend lectures and tutorials for SOCY457 and SOCY306 have had a heavy impact on my ability to complete the courses. I truly do believe that I have done my absolute best to try to manage my family issues at home on top of my schoolwork, and I sincerely wish that I did not have to ask for help. I require these two credits to graduate with a BAH degree in sociology, and it would be one of my greatest regrets if I was no longer able to graduate by the end of the Winter 2015 term.
I am completely confident that this problem will no longer affect my schoolwork in the future as my uncle has made arrangements with his sister-in-law to move in and take care of the girls until a more permanent answer can be found. My academic advisor, Haley Everson pointed out to me that my academic course load next semester was a bit heavy, and thankfully I am able to drop one of these courses to lighten the load as I am enrolled in more courses than necessary. I am 100 confident that moving forward I will be able to be very successful at Queen¿¿s and I cannot express how thankful I am for you taking the time to consider my circumstances.
