Appeal Letter

Tracie Quach
ST 20068157

Dear Associate Dean (Studies):
I am appealing the Faculty¿¿s decision about my academic dismissal for one year from the Faculty of Arts and Science. I fully acknowledge that my performance for this year was not well enough, but I am writing with the hope that you will reconsider your decision for me to stay in school next semester. With all respect, thank you for allowing me this opportunity to explain my circumstances, as well as taking the time to read this letter.
At the beginning of the school year, around October 12, I received a phone call from my family in Vietnam that my grandfather has been diagnosed with heart and lung problems. My grandfather helped to raised me for most of my childhood and hearing about the situations were heart-breaking. Throughout November to January, my grandfather suffered through one heart attack and his lungs had completely collapsed. I was faced with a host of stress and I could not focus on school, which ultimately led to the failing of my grades being under the minimum requirements. Every time I saw him on the phone was very difficult because his body was swollen, and his face cringed in pain, seeing him dealing such pain was hard and all I could do was to pray so that he could quickly recover. I wanted to visit my family in Vietnam, but I could not afford to go back, at the same time, my parents wanted me to continue my study abroad. However, by the end of February 2019, I was announced that he has passed away due to the sudden heart attack. His death was not sudden, but it was traumatizing because I have never had any close family members pass away. I had no one to share this problem with and I regret that I should¿¿ve let my professors know sooner about my absence. I suffered from depression and anxiety throughout this entire year, but I was not comfortable enough to share my problem with anyone. I was keeping everything to myself and that has tremendously affected my grades.
My personal life and mental health were major distractions that I couldn¿¿t complete all course load and the results for my cumulative GPA was under minimum requirements. I was not comfortable enough to go meet a personal counselor and thought I could handle it alone. I apologize for my lack of academic success due to circumstances that have impacted my performance over the past year. The situation is being resolved as I am taking my time to improve my academic performance over the summer. Also, I am attending other classes and activities to adjust my confidence and positive thinking. At the end of the semester, for my Chinese 200 course, I finally had the courage to share with professor Bai about the incident and she was very considerate about my situation. Therefore, I have plans to meet with each of my professors at the beginning of the semester to establish better relationships and learning environment, so I wouldn¿¿t be uncomfortable sharing with them if any incidents like this happen again. My future plans for next year if the committee overturn my suspension and allow me to return to Queen¿¿s University will be to be mainly focused on raising my GPA and attend regular meetings with a personal counselor to seek advice from them.
I sincerely apologize for my lack of academic performance and wish for your understanding to accept my appeal due to the circumstances. Please consider that returning to Queen¿¿s University before my suspension period is completed will is the best for me to succeed academically. Thank you for the time you have taken to consider my readmission and I truly hope that you allow me with a second chance to prove my hard work and raise my GPA.

Warmest regards,
Tracie Quach

Re: Academic Plan
Tracie Quach (20068157)

Please accept this academic plan as my supporting document for my appeal to Queen¿¿s University¿¿s letter of academic suspension from the faculty of Arts and Science for one year.
This academic plan is a supporting document with my appeal to the faculty that will help me to become a student in good standing, including my personal reflection, strategies, and resources that I plan to use to help me be successful academically if readmitted.
I fully knowledge my weak performance due to stressful circumstances. This academic year has been a shock to my emotional stage because I suffered from the loss of a close family member. I tried to follow a structured routine but because of negative thoughts and anxiety, I was not able to stay organized and use my time efficiently to finish the assignments on time. The results for my exams and finals were under required minimums and I understand what problems were affecting my GPA. I believe that if given another chance, I can achieve good academic results by showing my hard work and effective time managing.
In both semesters, I enrolled in GNDS212 and GNDS215 because they were necessary to major in Gender Studies. It was overwhelming in the beginning due to the workload that I had, along with my plans on switching to Film major. The focus of my study for next year will be to raise my GPA and then to change to a plan that is more suited to my academic background. Thus, I have managed to enroll in as many film courses as possible to raise my chance of switching to Film major.
Furthermore, I will seek assistance from campus resources such as the Writing Center and connect with a peer mentor to stay on track with my academic performance. I acknowledge that my writing skills are not strong, so by consulting advice with Student Academic Success Services will be an incredible help for my performance at Queen¿¿s University. It is competitive for my situation because of my academic suspension, but I respect the workload that is given and will go to the library every day to finish my assignments or review the materials of the course I have on that day. In my opinion, going to the library is the most tremendous motivation to see other students working, and to realize that I am responsible for managing and balancing both my school and personal life.
Additionally, I have taken other courses and events during the summer to reduce anxiety and overcome my depression after the loss of my grandfather. I am more positive and confident with my mental health and hope to prove my academic success in the following year. Thank you for your consideration to review my academic plan and appeal.
Best,
Tracie Quach
