Petition Letter
Petition Letter: Hello,
I am appealing to have my final grades for MATH 111 and CHEM 223 to reflect as a Credit (CR) standing. I have been experiencing extenuating circumstances since 2016, and it escalated during this past winter term. My circumstance affects my ability to focus, my memory and motivation. This has heavily impacted my attendance and academic performance especially in these two courses.
Math is usually a subject I excelled at, however my extenuating circumstances made it difficult to do as well as I usually do. My lack of attendance reflected on my final grade for MATH 111. Since it was usually my last class of the day, I found it difficult to focus and retain information during class or even have the motivation to go to class. Along with my poor performance during class, my situation made it difficult to meet deadlines. To compensate, I went to the online resources and tried to catch up whenever I could. However, due to my inconsistent motivation and lack of focus, it was hard to continuously stay on top of this course, especially when it covered topics that I was not familiar with from my previous math courses.
Regarding CHEM 223, I found that this course was especially difficult because it was content heavy. Since it was structured to be mainly memorization, I was nott able to recall all of the information during exams. When doing labs and practice questions, I was able to apply the information which showed that my main concern was memorizing the content. Unlike my other courses, my struggle to memorize content and specific details heavily impacted this course.
I decided to stay in these courses in spite of the difficulties because they are part of my degree plan. I took MATH 111 with the intent of taking a Math minor and I took CHEM 223 because I am planning on switching from Life Sciences to Biochemistry.
After recognizing my academic struggles, I utilized the resources offered at Student Services during the winter term. I submitted Self Declarations, I met with different people consistently to get on a plan and a structured routine and I even started working with Natasha, an Occupational Therapist, to work around my extenuating circumstances. These recourses greatly helped me during final exams, however, due to the late start on my plan, I was not able to drastically pull up my grades by the end of the semester. Nonetheless, I plan to continue with using these resources for my third year. I have also registered for QSAS to help me succeed in my academics.
Overall, my extenuating circumstances impacted my ability to perform well in these two courses, however I have a well-advised plan to ensure my success for the remainder of my undergraduate years. I have attached a document to support my circumstance. If you need supporting documents from the Biochemistry office, they have offered to provide one. Please let me know if there is anything else you may need when reviewing this appeal. Thank you for your time and consideration.
Best regards,
