Petition Letter
Petition Letter: Dear Associate Dean (Studies),
First I would like to say thank you for taking the time to read my letter of appeal.
I am appealing to drop BCHM 218 (Fall, 2018), CHEM 281 (Fall, 2018) and PHGY 215 (Fall, 2018).
I know that I have been struggling academically for a while specially when I started my second year (fall, 2018) as life science student at Queen¿¿s University. To be explicit the reason for my poor academic performance in last year was my mental health. I was in a state of severe depression last year.
I immigrated to Canada three years ago and I started to study English (ESL program) at Queen¿¿s University. I could get good marks at the end of my ESL program and I started my bachelor program on Fall 2017. Although I could pass all the courses that I had at the end of my first year, but my GPA was not good and it did not satisfy me. I had a lot of stress because of the new environment and the new culture and It was hard for me to communicate with other students so I could not find any friends to help me. My family supposed to come to Canada on 2016 with me but because of financial problems they could not come till July 2018. Being alone for two years in a new country made me depressed and it was affecting my academic performance. I decided to take fewer courses in Fall 2018 to improve my GPA, also I decided to talk to a psychologist about my depression but my depression was getting even worse. For midterm exams my grades were not bad, they were around 70s and I thought I can improve them on final exams but On December 2018 I could not study for the final exams and I failed all three courses I had. After that I decided to take three easy courses in Winter 2019 but after a while I found that I cannot study for them so I dropped them all to not get more F marks. Also in winter 2018 my family faced some financial problems so I had to find a part time job to pay some of my expenses.
I love Queen¿¿s university and I really do not want to lose the opportunity here. It has been more than three years since I came to Kingston and it will be very hard for me to leave. On March 2019 I could find a job, after working for a while I felt better also my family helping me a lot right now. I strongly feel that I can make a successful return to my studies and the only thing that makes me nervous about my future in Queen¿¿s is my GPA right now. If you accept my request and drop three courses I failed, I want to take 4 courses in Fall 2019 and try to improve my GPA. I hope you give me a second chance and I will do my best to prove that I am not a bad student, I just had hard time last year. Thank you again for considering this appeal.
