Petition Letter: Dear University Associate Deans,
My name is Tae Gordon and I am going into my third year at Queens University in the faculty of Arts and Science. I come to Queens from a relatively small town west of Calgary Alberta. I am writing regarding an appeal of my CHEM281 grade this past fall semester due to extenuating circumstances.
Coming to Queens was a major life changing event for me and my family, being the first extended period of time I would be away from my parents and two brothers. I came to Kingston to fulfill my lifelong dream of playing university football as well as study at one the most highly regarding universities in the nation. I underestimated the impact that moving across the country from my family would have on my support system but most of all the impact it would have on my families support system. In late October 2018 I was informed of the passing of man who was ultimately responsible for facilitating my mom¿¿s family out of Poland during a time of war and helping them reach Canada where they could live in safety. This had a profound effect on my mom and that would translate to me. I took immediate action and booked a flight home November 8th and would return to Kingston November 12th in order to attend the celebration of life and support my mom and grandmother. After the fact of booking the flight I realized that I would miss the second midterm in CHEM281. I reached out to professor Dr. John Carran and asked if there may be alternate date I could write or if I had any other options. He promptly responded that my only option was to weight my final 70. I immediately responded to say that I would accept that not sure of the mental toll that I would take over the course of the month. Returning from Kingston I couldn¿¿t help to feel that I needed to be there for my family at home and this started a vicious wave of self-doubt and guilt. It was extremely difficult to apply myself in studies and in athletics and that negatively impacted my on the field and in the classroom. With less than month from my return and my final exam I struggled to properly prepare myself under these circumstances

Academic Plan
Academic Plan: I have been taking measures to ensure I correct myself and seek my full potential at Queens. From maintaining a routine throughout the summer in my online courses and work I believe that these skills will translate to this fall semester. I have also arranged times that I would call home to ensure that I¿¿m there for my family in times of need. After making serval academic appointment and reaching out to learning facilitators I now see that I should have dropped the course as I was in a very improbable situation for my success. I plan to take CHEM281 in the first semester of fall 2019 as I know my potential in that class. I have reached out to the co chairman of undergrad Biology (Julie French) and with this successful appeal she would accept me back into the Biology undergrad plan and continue to play football for the university.
