Petition Letter
Petition Letter: On Wednesday July 10th, 2019 I was informed by an academic advisor Melody Monte that Queens offers the opportunity of appealing grades. I am reaching out in hopes to request an aegrotat (AG) standing in the Introduction to Statistics course. I am fully aware that I am reaching out after the 21-day deadline, however I am hoping that this request will be honoured. On October 20th, 2018, an unexpected family member passed away just prior to my Statistics exam. This person was someone who I was very close with, and loved very much. His death had taken place the same day as Homecoming, and with the inability to fully comprehend the news, I began to suffer panic attacks. The constant weight, and guilt of not being there when he passed caused a lot of mental distress. My mother kept postponing his funeral due to my sisters, and cousins being in school. With all the phone calls, travelling back and forth to Toronto to plan his funeral, packing his things, and having to keep on top of school work was the most physically and emotionally exhausting thing I had ever dealt. With exams quickly approaching, we decided to have an informal celebration of life just a few days shy of December. By this time, my academic mark in statistics was being effected. My housemates were trying to motivate me to continue my studies, when I knew mentally I could not. I had not grieved for my loss, and it was not until mid- December when it was really starting to hit me. I was unmotivated, depressed, fatigued and saw studying as my last resort. However, I knew that I had to be strong enough and go attend my statistics exam anyway. I needed a 50 to pass the class, and did not get that. Not because I did not know the material but because I could not mentally focus on my exam. Prior to his death, my marks were substantially good. I had gotten an A on the final project, passed majority of the quizzes, and attended every single tutorial to learn the software skills. I do not want something I had no control over to affect my transcript in the future. I am still going to enroll in KNPE 251 this Fall and retake it, as I did not pass. However, I truly hope you consider giving me a AG standing as I had no control over these extenuating circumstances, and was unaware Queens offered these resources.
