Petition Letter
Petition Letter: Dear Associate Dean of Studies,
I am appealing to drop BIOL 243(Summer 2019) and ENIN340 (Summer 2019) after the academic deadline due to several extenuating circumstances during the summer term from June to August 2019.
The situation started when I was feeling atypically ill in mid June this summer. I was doing well in summer courses until I got ill and injured myself in the 2 week period that I was in Taiwan. Physical symptoms on top of the anxiety and depression of being ill delayed my academic progress over the course since June 10th. I was hoping that it would be a temporary situation so I reached out to Professor Alan Ableson and Professor Sidneyeve Matrix regarding my extenuating circumstances and submitted a self declaration of absence through the online portal. However my illness didn't subside and I finally reached out to an Internal Medicine Physician in the town I was staying in on June 18th and received temporary treatments until I return to Canada on June 25th. My physical and mental illnesses took a huge toll on my academic progress and I was unable to complete an assignment, a midterm for ENIN 340 as well as weekly tutorial assignments and a midterm for BIOL 243 for the rest of June.
Unfortunately after returning to Canada, my partner's father, David, passed away due to an acute heart failure in Cleveland Ohio at the end of June. We attended the funeral and memorial services over the weekend of June 28th to July 1st. Unable to take care of myself through grief and illnesses in Kingston, I returned to Toronto in July to recover and stayed with my mother. She has been going through divorce with my father the past months and with the overwhelming amount of family matter I was lost and unable to continue with my academic duties. I also took a break from volunteering in Queen's Psychology labs (with Dr. Ji and Dr. Salomons) as well as my part time job in Kingston to give myself room to recover. I decided to reach out for help through counselling and took time off for my wellbeing as I continue taking anxiety medication.
I reached out to my professors on July 16th, after 2 weeks of recovery regarding the possibility of academic accommodations. Unfortunately I was unable to complete course evaluations and professor Matrix has informed me that I am to reach out to the faculty for help.
I reached out to my family doctor in Toronto in August and I am currently seeking support from school counsellors and physician to help me get through the summer as well as my return in September. I plan on retaking the courses I am appealing to drop this coming year so I can complete my degree in 2020.
Thank you so much for your considerations.
