My name is Katryna Mracic and I am entering my second year of studies at Queen¿¿s. I am writing this letter to initiate an appeal for my PSYC100 course due to health issues I experienced throughout my first year.
I began dealing with mental health struggles in October 2018. At that time, I was unaware of the reality I was facing. After months of attempting to cope, I finally was able to bring myself to speak to my parents. I explained my day to day feelings and my physical struggles, which brought me (us) to visit a physician in late February 2019. After an appointment with Dr. Douglas Jang, I was diagnosed with depression and Dr. Jang suggested a number of options. At that time, I chose to proceed with a prescription medication regime, in an effort to complete my first year of studies as I believed that I would be able to persevere. Unfortunately, this was not the case.
In regard to PSYC100, I enjoyed the course, however it was very difficult for me to memorize and continue to apply myself to the demands of the course. Although PSYC100 is the only course I failed; my other courses were also affected by my condition. School was extremely challenging all year due to both mental and physical manifestations related to my depression diagnosis.
As recommended by Dr. Amanda Adams my family doctor, I commenced psychological therapy this summer in order to deal and cope with my day to day struggles in relation to my depression. My therapist (Ms. Camille Cato) suggested that I seek counselling at Queen¿¿s upon my return this September.
With the above in mind, I would request the commencement of a formal appeal in effort to officially drop my PSYC100 course and remove it from my GPA. Kindly advise as to the process and documentation required to support my appeal request.
