Petition Letter: To the Associate Dean of Studies,
I am writing to you today to request an academic appeal for the course CHEM 282 (taken summer 2017) as well as credit standing for BCHM 218, MICR 221 and PHGY 214 (all taken winter 2017). I am aware that I am filing this appeal past the deadline, this was due to being unaware this process existed until I believed it was too late. It was only when I met with an academic advisor at the beginning of this summer that I was informed I was still able to apply.
During the winter and summer months of 2017 I was experiencing circumstances that were far out of my control and this effected my schoolwork greatly. In January of 2017 my mother, whom I live with in Kingston, was diagnosed with a severe mental illness which affected both her and the family. Being the only other adult in the household, both emotional and physical support fell on myself, for my mother and younger brother. This diagnosis and subsequent findings also lead to a police investigation into the perpetrator.
Not only was this emotionally draining on me, but majority of my time was also spent assuming caretaker roles such as cleaning, grocery shopping, transportation to medical appointments and maintenance of the house and vehicles. Due to extreme emotional distress and anxiety in social situations, my mother was unable to leave the house, resulting in the inability to work. This added the additional stress of financial instability. It was these circumstances that prevented me from spending enough time on my course work, effecting both projects and exams and thus my final grades.
I attempted to retake the CHEM 282 course in the summer of 2017 due to failing in the winter semester, but I was unable to complete it due the police investigation that began in May of 2017, which furthered my mother's need for support.
As you can see on my transcript in the years following this time, I began excelling in my studies. This was due to extensive therapy and my mother qualifying for disability. We were then more financially stable, and she was able to again resume taking care of the household and my younger sibling.
I have attached a letter written by my mother's therapist at the time to confirm the timeline of these events as well as the severity. If a more detailed account of events is need or you have any further questions, please feel free to contact me.
