Dear Dr. Jenn Stephenson,
I am appealing to drop PHYS 118 (Summer, 2019) after the deadline and have the course show as dropped on my transcript.
I was not sufficiently informed of my academic career options and received no notice of the formal introduction of another Major option that does not require PHYS 118, BAH in Environmental Studies, of which I am interested in adjusting my academic career to complete. In July, after the drop deadline for summer term courses, I made the realization that the BAH in Environmental Studies was an option while reviewing my current program of Environmental Geography (EGPY). During the weeks leading up to the June drop deadline, my family and I had been dealing with circumstances involving the health of my grandmother and ceremonial time commitments to my late grandfather. At that time, I was distracted away from the academic processes that would have allowed myself to make an informed decision before passing the drop deadline. I feel that this was this best opportunity to complete the course that I would have or will have, as I feel scheduling a first year course along with my other required courses and training schedule at this moment would require too significant of a sacrifice of prior commitments.
In the future, I will take lighter course loads so that I can ensure a balance between academics, work, and athletics. As a student athlete competing for the Men¿¿s Varsity Cross Country team at Queen¿¿s, I have had to adjust my course load and drop courses that affected my academic success and scheduling due to the team¿¿s training plan. However, I now understand that I need to choose my courses to ease scheduling for both, along with my work schedule. In the meantime, recognizing that I do not receive an Athletic Financial Award, nor help from government financial support programs, means I must realize that the required full-time work schedule during the summer, a full athletic training schedule, and a 6.0-unit summer course is very difficult to manage and perhaps an unrealistic lifestyle to pursue.
