Petition Letter
Petition Letter: Due to documented health issues with Queen¿¿s Student Wellness Centre accompanied by self-hate and avoidance I was not able to appeal in a 21-day period. I am appealing to drop BIOL334 from 2016 Fall, and entire courses listed under 2017 Winter and 2017 Summer.
Starting from the end of 2016 Fall term I had developed anxious feelings that prevented me from focusing on schoolwork. It reached a point during a BIOL334 final exam when I felt so overwhelmed that I left the examination unfinished. At the time I was so ashamed and blamed myself for lack of ability.
For 2017 Winter term, I had developed panic attacks in public and in lectures. I often left mid-lectures crying and/or hard time breathing. I withdrew myself from places like libraries or any social gatherings in fear that it would come up anytime. There were times that going out of my own room was a challenge because I was so full of shame and embarrassed of myself. At one point I lost entire function as an individual. The withdrawal was noticed by housemates and encouraged me to seek for a help. I saw counsellors and physicians in Wellness Centre and started a medication. Counselling held once a week and a check-in over the phone when I could not make it physically. A dose and type of medication was monitored by a physician. During this time, it was focused on performing daily practice such as getting out of a bed, taking a shower, going for a walk, and eating.
A counsellor provided me letters that I could provide to professors to defer assignments and exams. However, a feeling of incompetence and shame prevented me from submission not to mention a thought of dropping courses. I left Kingston in May to a roommate¿¿s hometown to dissociate myself from familiar environments. Since then, I have had meetings with a counsellor regularly. The family doctor referred me to psychiatrists that adjusted my doses and invited me to participate a group CBT held at Health Science Centre in Winnipeg. Gaining sanity and maintaining mental stability is an ongoing challenge I am striving for and hoping to pursue my degree in Biochemistry.
Starting September 7th 2019, regular therapy sessions will be held with a private local counsellor. It is expected to work on coping mechanisms and techniques to prevent and/or to decrease a risk of a relapse. An appointment with a physician at Queen¿¿s Student Wellness Centre is on September 17th and registering to Accessibility Services would be discussed to allow any proper and needed accommodation.
I hope that my efforts into managing my health show that I am trying to successfully readjust to school. Building more support systems than ever is expected to be helpful.
