Petition Letter
Petition Letter: Dear Associate dean of Biology.
My name is Arturo Gonzalez and I am appealing to drop CHEM 282 (winter, 2019) and ANAT 216 (winter, 2019) from my record. My extenuating circumstances a are that I have been dealing with a very prominent anxiety disorder and depression that has been affecting my test taking abilities. My anxiety causes me to blank out during exams and not do as well as I could have done. It has never been so bad that I fail a class but last testing season I had a spike in anxiety where it made it particularly bad and made it especially hard to pass the tests. My diagnosis has been classified as severe so a spike was especially bad for me because my anxiety is already very bad no matter how well I have learned to handle it.
The reason that I only failed these courses and not my other three is because going into these courses I didn¿¿t have grades that supported the failure of the exams, and the course structures did not favour my achieving good grades, especially since the exams were worth so much and Anatomy had bell ringers which amplified my anxiety even more than usual. In the other courses I wasn¿¿t as nervous because I really enjoyed them and I managed to get decent grades in projects and tutorials which were big parts of the courses. I didn¿¿t drop the courses earlier because I thought I could manage to scrape by and pass the courses with a D like I always do and I didn¿¿t imagine it would be as bad as it ended up being.
To make sure that my anxiety doesn¿¿t affect my academics in the same way or at least to the same degree that it did during this last exam season I have been doing things to better handle my anxiety. I have been going to the counselling as provided by the school as often as I could get an appointment, I have also been going to group therapy once a week apart from seeing a school counsellor. Another thing I have done is added another medication onto the ones I have already been taking to see if that would help me more. I have also been taking a lighter course load, four courses instead of five to see if that would help. These things will work to reduce my anxiety and make it easier for me to do better in classes.
Thank you for reading my application and I hope you will consider granting my appeal.
