Petition Letter

Petition Letter: To whom this may concern,

My name is Emma O'Hare and I am a third year health studies major who studies on campus. As a result of an on-going health condition I underwent a mandatory major surgery on September 3rd, 2019. Unfortunately, due to the nature of this surgery I required a minimum downtime of 1 month which required lifting nothing over 5lbs for 1 month and gradually working my way towards regaining full strength. During surgery, I encountered some complications that made my recovery a lot harder than anticipated and thus, despite my limited mobility I made my return to classes on campus for week 3. Having been thrown back into classes before the recommended time, and with over 300 sutures in place, I accidentally over exerted myself and caused an access and infection on my suture line. I was treated in hospital for a few days and underwent aggressive treatment with IV fluids. With a compromised immune system and not the cleanest bill of health, I also encountered many other infections to other areas of my body as a result and once again was admitted for a second time. All my professors and TA's have been extremely understanding, considerate and accommodating, however, I understand that in regards to PSYC100/101 there is only so much that can be done to accommodate me because of the density and pace of the course. After much consideration and guidance I have decided that at this point if I went forward with completing this course, I would have missed enough content that I would be at risk for failing. Meghan E. Norris, the chair of undergraduate studies for the department of psychology says she would support my appeal. If you require any further documentation or explanation I would be happy to provide you with it.

Sincerely,
Emma O'Hare
