Submit an Academic Petition or Appeal

Petition Letter: I am submitting an appeal to drop a course (DRAM 319) after the official drop date. I enrolled in this course on July 18th 2019. After the first week of classes, I decided to switch into an online course (DRAM 205) because I needed a more flexible schedule, as I was experiencing financial stress and needed to prioritize my personal finances. On September 13th 2019, I met with the Dan School of Drama and Music academic coordinator and advisor, Lee Atkinson, in order to switch out of DRAM 319 and into DRAM 205. During the meeting, I explained that I was unable to add DRAM 205 and drop DRAM 319 on my SOLUS due to technical difficulties. We discussed switching me into DRAM 205 and out of DRAM 319 during this meeting, and I was under the impression that the adding and dropping had gone smoothly due to the fact that I was enrolled in DRAM 205 shortly afterwards. On September 19th 2019, I sent an email to the professor of DRAM 319 (Clelia Scala) explaining that I had dropped her class for personal reasons. She was understanding and acknowledged that I had dropped her class in a follow-up email.

After going over my courses with an Arts and Science Academic Advisor on November 6th 2019, it was pointed out that on my academic advisement report it was still noted that I was enrolled in DRAM 319. Up until this point, I had thought that I was no longer enrolled in this course because of the meeting that I had with Lee Atkinson and the email chain I had with Clelia Scala, both of whom acknowledged my dropping of the class.

Due to unfortunate and technical circumstances that were not under my control, the dropping of DRAM 319 was not updated in the system. I believe that I should be granted an appeal and should be allowed to drop the course past its drop date without financial or academic penalty because of the fact that I went through all of the right channels to drop my class early on before the drop date. I have emails from Clelia Scala on September 19th and support from Lee Atkinson in order to back my appeal.
