Petition Letter
Petition Letter: To whom it may concern,
I am requesting Aegrotat standing in three of my Fall term courses because of a mental illness I am facing at this time.
I believe depression is something I¿¿ve been struggling with for at least two years, but it¿¿s only been recently that I¿¿ve only been able to identify it. And despite not being able to identify it at the time I nevertheless took steps prior to the start of the academic year to treat myself. My self-treatment methods proved to be effective and I attempted to implemented them (albeit unsuccessfully) into my life at Queen¿¿s. Surely enough, the symptoms first began to appear towards the end of September and by mid-November prevented me from functioning normally.
As the year progressed, it became harder for me to attend classes because of social anxiety and paranoia, and as a result the quality of my school work started to diminish. It didn¿¿t take long before I started having problems completing assignments and studying for tests due to difficulties concentrating. I tried my best to keep my spirits up as much as I could during this time and took initiatives to better manage my time. My initiatives failed to help my situation and it slowly became harder and harder for me to go about the day because of my low mood and low energy. I decided to see a doctor and was prescribed antidepressants. The medication failed to work and by November I was losing motivation to continue my studies and it was at this time that I began having thoughts of suicide. By this point I felt like I needed to temporarily put school aside and focus full-time on getting professional help, which is exactly what I did.
I ended up emailing one of my professors to explain my intentions. She was incredibly helpful in explaining what my options were, and she referred me to a number of resources available to me at Queen¿¿s. I ended up taking her help and I explored many of the resources she recommended (e.g. the PLC and on-campus counsellors). I also began to see a psychologist who is currently assisting me at this time.
I will be back for the Winter term with a lighter course load and with new strategies to deal with my depression.
Thank you for your time and consideration.
Sincerely,
Patrick Bajorek
