Petition Letter: To Associate Dean (Studies) of Arts and Science Undergraduate Program:
I am petitioning for dropping STAT 263 from fall term 2019.
I started to not attend STAT 263 classes around the fifth week of fall. That was because couldn¿¿t manage the workload. I always stayed up late to finish my study and thus I was having a hard time getting up early in the morning to attend the lectures. Obviously I was far behind, but I felt I could keep making up the work. With the reference of course cram, I was able to learn things that I missed through online resources like Khan Academy. Two days ago, I was doing the past exams and I realized that many calculation steps and requirements of this course are completely different from what I have learned from other resources. So I started my review all over again and today I found that I have insufficient time to prepare for the exam and get a desirable grade. This exam weights at least 60 of my final grade according to the course plan thus it can strongly affect my overall grade. This has been brought me lots of stress and negatively impacted on my preparation for other two exams. Since the other two courses are essential for me to get in the designated program next year, I decided to drop STAT 263 so that I could have better performance in other courses and thus improve my grades for now.
As a first-year international student, university life and the study mode is quite different from what I was used to and I definitely performed poorly with the changes. In the future, I would try my best to keep up with classes, arrange my schedule better, and develop a healthier lifestyle ¿¿ getting up early. Also, I am planning to retake STAT 263 next fall semester, attend lectures, get a better understanding of the knowledge that this course covers, and get a better grades.
This letter serves for my formal petition and my explanation of the circumstances. I would appreciate it if the Associate Dean would allow me to drop STAT 263 from Fall 2019 even though I have missed the deadline.
