Submit an Academic Petition or Appeal

Petition Letter: I was concussed at a Women's Varsity Volleyball practice on Oct. 25th. At the time of my concussion and within the following week, I was unaware of how my symptoms would affect my participation in my courses for the rest of the semester as I believed this to be a minor concussion with anywhere from a one to two-week recovery. Unfortunately, my symptoms persisted for over a month, greatly affecting my participation in classes. At the time of the academic drop date on November 1st, I was in no frame of mind to make a decision about dropping a course. My symptoms were at their worst in that week and I had no idea how long my concussion would affect my participation. For these two reasons, I am requesting an appeal to drop a course after the academic deadline. Geology 321 is a core course for my plan and after having a discussion with my professor in late November concerning deferring or retaking the course, we decided that it would be in my best interest to retake the course as it is lab-based and I was unable to participate in the majority of the labs as well as attend lectures. I have his support in my appeal to drop his course as he believes it is best for both my long-term health (as I have had to defer other exams to the new year - in terms of stress) and my academic career.
