Hello, my name is Zoe Trebell and I am appealing to the Arts and Science Faculty of Queen¿¿s University to remove my first-year sociology grade from my university transcript.
Following second semester of 2019 I was granted incompletes in SOCY 122 and DEVS 100 by my professors Mark Hostletler and Sachil Singh. During this time, I had created an agreed upon timeline to complete my remaining assignments for each course. I had completed and submitted my DEVS 100 assignments by mid-June and had my sociology paper scheduled to be due on June 30th.
My extenuating circumstances occurred when my father sold our house and moved into a new home with his girlfriend, her son and her father. I struggled with change following my mother¿¿s battle with cancer and subsequent death a year and a half ago. It made moving from my home I was familiar with into a different home and strange environment difficult at the time. My feelings of loss became worse when my step father and I stopped talking the same weekend my dad moved houses. We are very close, so I felt as though I had lost everything that had become a stable environment following so many years of constant instability, specifically losing my home base and primary connection to my mother when I most needed it. Losing both of these things abruptly triggered me, sending me into a manic depression. I could not eat and would sleep for most of the day, at times feeling such a loss of ambition and energy I was unable to go to work. My SOCY 122 paper was due the week after my father moved, drastically diminishing the quality of my paper. I was unable to function at a normal level and was mentally and physically too weak to ask for help at the time. Since I was unable to complete this paper to the best of my ability, it led to me failing the course. Following a period of manic depression my doctor, Dr. Kimberly Merlot prescribed me anti-depressants and anxiety medication after being admitted to the hospital.
Since starting my additional medication, I have been able to feel control over my mood and have reconciled with my step-father. I greatly appreciated my professors allowing me the incompletes and accommodating me following second semester. Unfortunately, the series of events that happened this summer were unexpected and greatly affected me. Since being back at school I have been able to focus on my academics and improve my GPA. Through seeking help via therapy, my anxiety has improved, and it allowed me to commit to school in a way that I haven¿¿t been able to since my mother died. The reason I am appealing this course now is because I was unaware that my extenuating circumstances this summer were grounds for a possible appeal. After meeting with Meg Hall at the end of first semester she suggested I submit one. I am aware I am on academic probation following first year and my hope is to appeal my SOCY 122 grade in order to move forward positively.
Best Regards,
Zoe Trebell.

Since I completed my sociology course, I have taken necessary steps in order to have a successful second year. This year I have been able to focus on my course work and devote the necessary time needed for assignments among other school work. Rather than taking a full course load I have a reduced schedule in which I am currently taking three courses in classes I truly enjoy. I am passionate about history and after doing thorough research prior to starting last semester I was able to find classes in the Classics department that I found engaging, such as Greek Civilization and Ancient Warfare. This semester I have signed up for additional classics courses with the intention of majoring in this field.
I am in therapy in order to work through my previous issues as well as bettering myself to prepare appropriately for future situations. In addition to therapy I use Queen¿¿s resources such as QSWS and SASS as they have been a large aid this year. I have begun yoga downtown Kingston in order to relive stress in a healthy manner and plan on getting my teaching license this summer. These approaches have helped reduce my anxiety and depression which in turn has allowed me to concentrate in class or on the task at hand. My new medication has helped me in seeking the help I needed and aided me in finding outlets to help relive feelings that previously restricted me from functioning to my full potential. This semester I will continue to work hard towards my studies by attending all lectures and tutorials, as well as managing and staying on top of my workload. Additionally, I will continue to maintain my mental health through therapy and yoga.
Thank you,
Zoe Trebell.
