Submit an Academic Petition or Appeal

Petition Letter: Dear Associate Dean,

I am appealing to waive the one term deadline for MATH 112. Over the time period of September 2018 to November 2019 ¿¿ the beginning of my first year and half way through my second year at Queen¿¿s ¿¿ I have dealt with medical challenges, severe physical illnesses, psychological challenges and traumatic family problems. These not only compounded but followed one after the other in varying degrees of intensity.

I am requesting an appeal only now due to the ongoing nature of these circumstances, and as I had postponed my final exam with the permission of my professor. This process was the intended plan until mid-fall semester 2019. When it became clear that my various circumstances were not going to improve as much as this hopefully made extension relied upon and the ¿¿F¿ on my transcript was solidified, I sought out alternatives with my academic advisor and was made aware of the option to appeal to drop.

I also wish to make it clear that I attempted to drop this course while taking it last year within the proper dropping timeframe. I was unaware at the time that this course was a co-requisite to another course I was taking. I nevertheless persisted on the grounds of both my multiple compounding extenuating circumstances and that this was not a required course for my program. I was granted permission from my professor as well was informed by several members of the Faculty of Computing and the Faculty of Mathematics that this would not be an issue. However, I was ultimately denied permission from a Computing professor.

I understand the appeal system is not designed to compensate for circumstances that are chronic or ongoing in nature. I offer assurance that I have since sought out the proper medical tools to manage my medical ailments, the aforementioned family problems have since become less tumultuous, and I have a robust emotional support system at Queen¿¿s.

I sincerely hope my appeal is looked upon in a positive light. Thank you for your time and consideration.
