Petition Letter: To Whom It May Concern:
My name is Nadine Charania and I am a third year student in the BScH Specialization in Biology and Psychology program at Queen's. I am submitting an appeal to drop CHEM281 (Fall 2019) after the drop deadline due to an extenuating circumstance.
Due to an illness diagnosed in the summer of 2019, I have been having occasional flare-ups which have prevented me from participating in my studies to my fullest abilities. These flare-ups usually lasted a few days before I was able to return to school.
Because of this illness, I missed the first CHEM281 midterm, worth 15 percent of my final grade. I contacted the professor and he told me that he would add 15 percent to either my second midterm or my final exam, depending on which I did better on. Unfortunately, by the time the second midterm came, I was also unable to write it due to my illness. The agreement made with the professor was that the value of my first and second midterms would be added to my final exam. This meant that the total value of my final exam would be 95 percent of my grade.
By the time I had missed the second midterm and found out my final exam would be worth 95 percent of my grade, the drop deadline already passed. Because of this, I tried to prepare for the exam however I was unable to balance this along with my other courses while caring for my health. I am being treated for this recently diagnosed condition and my health has been improving. If my condition continues to improve as expected, I hope to retake CHEM281 during the summer 2020 or fall 2020 term.
I am registered with QSAS for my condition and they have documentation from my doctors describing the illness and my accommodations. I also attached my QSAS advisor, Meg Hall, on all the emails to my professor about the missed exams so she is aware of the circumstances.
