Petition Letter
Petition Letter: Dear Associate Deans (Studies), I am writing because I wish to appeal to drop SOCY 226 (Fall, 2019). Due to physical and mental health issues at the end of last semester, I was unable to complete my final papers for SOCY 226.
By December 2, 2019 I had completed all coursework for three out of four of my classes. However, I still had to complete the take home final exam for my SOCY 226 class, which consisted of two essays due on December 15. On December 3 I began to feel physically unwell so I took a train home and booked an appointment with my family doctor. By the time I saw her on December 6, I was terribly sick and could hardly leave my bed. I was also very stressed because I was behind schedule and my health was only getting worse. My doctor wrote me a note asking for a three-day extension but my professor said he was unable to review notes. This made me even more stressed. After spending three days trying to write my papers, my physical illness worsened and my mental health spiralled down as a result of trying to work while sick and feeling more and more anxious about my upcoming deadline. I tried my hardest to write but I couldn't get words down. On December 9 I was admitted to the emergency room at Sunnybrooke Hospital. I then realized I couldn¿¿t carry on trying to finish the essays as my physical and mental health were seriously at risk. I also decided, together with my parents, that I should take the winter semester off university as I hadn't yet been properly diagnosed and I was concerned that my mental health would not recover if I returned to my studies in early January. I have a doctor¿¿s note written on December 20 that briefly explains this situation. On January 10 she wrote another note explaining that I am still ill and we are running more tests.
I¿¿d like to drop this course because I was physically unable to finish it and I therefore failed. I feel this does not reflect the student that I am, as under normal circumstances I always complete my work. I am currently taking this winter semester off and I have been seeing doctors for my physical health, as well as a therapist for my mental health, in order to ensure that I am better for when I return to Queen¿¿s. I plan to retake SOCY 226 in the fall semester of 2020.
I hope you understand.
Sincerely,
Christophe
