Petition Letter

Petition Letter: To whom it may concern;

My name is Mackenzy Quinton and I am currently in my second year as a Politics student at Queen's university. First year was a very difficult transition for me academically. I initially started in September last year not knowing what I wanted my focus to be in terms of studies. Therefore, I selected a wide range of courses to help me get a better sense of where my strengths and interests lie. I discovered part way through that several of the courses I was taking presented very significant challenges for me which began to impact me mentally. I consider myself to be a strong student and I tried my very best to deal with the academic struggles I was having and the anxiety I experienced on my own.

I only realized the full impact it was having when I continued to receive the grades that I felt were not reflective of my true ability. This experience resulted in me having to reach out to Queen¿¿s Mental Health Services and I continue to see a therapist at this time. When I applied for my Politics major last year I met the Politics 110 grade requirement however, some of the other courses that I took brought my overall grade average down significantly. As a result, I was denied entry into the Politics major.

As I mentioned, I continue to receive assistance through Queen¿¿s Mental Health and will continue to do so. I am trying to use the strategies and coping mechanisms I am learning about that are needed to be successful. Therefore, I am requesting that the grades for ASTR 101, ECON 110 and HIST 122 be changed to CR standing so that I can ensure my spot in the Politics Major this year. The stress of the uncertainty this presents for me is a contributing factor compounding my ability to focus and do as well as I know I can do. I am fearful that my university experience will be cut short to three years if I do not get accepted into the Politics major. I remain committed to doing well in this program and feel that this is the area of my greatest strength and interest. I am also including documentation to support the fact that I am receiving help and will continue to do so.

Thank you for your consideration. I look forward to hearing from you soon. If you require any further information, please do not hesitate to contact me at the information below.

Sincerely,

Mackenzy Quinton
