Submit an Academic Petition or Appeal

Petition Letter: I would like to make a Retroactive LOP as advised by Haley Everson, the Appeals Coordinator and Academic Advisor of the Arts and Science department. The reason for my appeal is that I took a few courses at the Technical University of Eindhoven in the Netherlands this semester, while on an academic leave from Queen¿¿s. The reasons for taking an academic leave was related to the fact that my parents are separating, which caused me emotional distress. I felt it was necessary to reconnect to my family in the Netherlands, also because my grandmother from mother¿¿s side had just passed away. As I wanted to remain active with my studies, I decided to enroll for a semester at the Technical University of Eindhoven, which has a stellar reputation worldwide for its science and engineering programs. When I was ready to return I was informed that I should have submitted a letter of permission to Queen¿¿s university prior to taking these courses. I was completely unaware of this fact and at the time when I discussed taking an academic leave, it was not mentioned either. I would really like to receive credit for the courses I took at the University of Eindhoven, including the ones I am currently completing. This is really important to me because not only did I put a lot of hard work into completing those courses, they can also count as prerequisites to the courses I need to complete for my degree at Queen¿¿s University. Without receiving those credits, I would be seriously disadvantaged as it would delay my program considerably. With all the stress in my personal life, it would be really helpful if this issue can be addressed and I can restart my studies at Queen¿¿s University in a favourable position. Your support in this matter is therefore greatly appreciated.
