Dear Appeals Office,
As you know, I am registered with disability services to assist me to be successful at Queen¿¿s University. I struggle with depression and anxiety. I experience the majority of my symptoms during second semester. This past semester has been challenging for me due to a number of reasons. I am currently living in a house with four roommates with three rooms upstairs and two rooms downstairs. My room was downstairs. Up until January, all of us in the house were female. However, in January, one roommate left and our new roommate is a male student from Mexico. He is older and has a different schedule than the rest of us. I now struggle with getting enough sleep given his schedule and noise. I have been proactive in securing alternative accommodations and have a new place set up for May 1, 2020 through Queen¿¿s housing. It is much closer to campus and with a roommate I have known since grade nine. This housing arrangement is a good fit for me and will support me with my studies.
In addition to the above, while celebrating my birthday, I suffered a concussion on January 1, 2020. This resulted in a trip by ambulance to KGH. I was released but still am struggling with noise, lights and overall exhaustion. Recovering from a concussion is a slow process.
Finally, last January (2019) my mother was in a very serious car accident. As a result, she finally received a diagnosis of PTSD and a brain injury after many medical appointments with specialists. She has not been able to drive any significant distance since the accident and is working very part time. As a result, I have had to help out more than previously thought. I am required to assist by driving her to her concussion physio-therapy appointments every week. This has created extra stress on me and my ability to manage my courses and provide help to my parents. I have also had to get a part time job to be able to continue with my studies.
I am currently enrolled in three classes and have classes on Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday. The course I wish to drop, DEVS 300 takes place on Wednesdays; it is a required course for my program. As such, I will be required to retake the course in order to graduate. I have missed a number of the classes because I find I am just exhausted after Tuesday and if I don¿¿t tend to my self-care on Wednesday, I am not able to function Thursday or Friday. My accommodations state that I am able to have a reduced course load. This semester has been the worst semester of my university career, functioning normally is something I have really struggled with.
Thank you for taking the time to review and consider my request. Should you require any more information, please contact me as soon as possible.
Yours truly,
Lenna Grinnell
