Petition Letter: I am appealing a late drop for my fall term biology 212 course due to major unexpected medical and life events. Initially, I was unable to focus and concentrate on my studies due to the death of a loved one. When my grandmother first fell ill, I was commuting quite often to help provide caregiving during the time before her passing. It was important for me to spend that precious time with her during her last days. She passed November 1st and I was unable to attend any classes after this, or finish the semester due to unforeseen medical issues, and dealing with funeral arrangments.
In early October, I noticed a change in my vision and a local clinic referred me to the urgent eye-care clinic at Hotel Dieu Hospital. Soon after this, in early November, I was told I had a serious retinal detachment that required immediate attention or else I could lose my vision. Thus I had my first surgery in November to correct it and was put on a strict bed rest regiment for a minimum of 4 weeks. Approximately one week after the first surgery, I noticed something was off and the doctors told me that the first surgery was not successful and that I required second emergency surgery. Since the second surgery was more invasive, it was ordered that I abided by a strict bed rest policy that involved minimal movement and to remain laying on my right side at all times.
Furthermore, I was ordered to take a leave of absence from work and school. This was ordered to eliminate any eye strain or blood pressure increases that could impair the healing process. This was a very restrictive regiment that included abstaining from activities such as reading, watching videos, or any form of physical activity. At present, I am still on mandated rest, and thus, unfortunately, have been unable to return to my studies, and have lost my year.
I appreciate your time in considering my appeal.
