Petition Letter: To Whom it may concern,
I, Navneetha Hardikar, am writing this letter to appeal to drop a course past the drop deadline. I took a microbiology course (MICR 360) in the fall semester of 2019, which I did not pass as it was not a course I initially wanted to take but had to as it was the only course option that was available to me as a 5th year Biotechnology specialization student. My initial plan was to take a 500-level advanced seminar course to fulfill the options requirement but was told by the Biology department that I did not require it for my program and also spaces in those courses are limited so only those who really require it will be the main priority, so my options were further limited to either MICR 360 or PHAR 340. I could not take PHAR 340 as I did not have the prerequisite for it, so I was left with MICR 360. Since MICR 360 was a course I was not interested in taking and was not relevant to my program, it led me to do poorly in the course despite the effort I put into it. I could not drop this said course before the drop deadline as it provided me with the last 3 units I needed to graduate so I had no choice but to continue in the course despite knowing I would not do well. Additionally, this course did not have a lot of assignments to help me raise my mark as it only had two midterms and a final exam that was worth 60. Although, I had initially known that I would receive a low grade in the course, I was not expecting to fail the course entirely. Additionally, I was more focused on other courses that were relevant to my program as I wanted to do well in those courses and that's why this said course was the only course that was affected in the fall semester. Due to this failed course, I was lacking 3 units required for my program, which I have discussed with the Biology Department and Arts and Science department for other options.
I understand that this may not be a regular extenuating circumstance, but I am hoping that this letter manages to convey my reasons as to why I am appealing to drop the said course.
