Petition Letter
Petition Letter: Dear Associate Dean,
I am appealing to have credit standing in the following course for the Fall 2019 semester and to be granted a late drop in the following course.
Credit standing:
- Econ 239
Late drop:
- Gphy 203
The situation I was in last semester greatly impacted my academics, my social life and my mental health. I was involved in a situation where one of my parents made some decisions that greatly impacted my sister¿¿s and my life, to a point where I no longer felt safe in my own house. I was thinking about this situation 24/7, being on the phone at least 4 hours a day with my sister, who was stuck at home with one of my parents and felt the need to talk to me about it, and also my dad, who was in another country and had restrictions about how and when he could come home. It impacted my academics a lot because it got to my head, where I started to feel very stressed, which then turned into extreme anxiety. I barely went to any of my classes because my anxiety had taken over so much that I only wanted to be alone in my room because it was the only place I felt safe and comfortable. I only went to a few of the first Econ 239 classes, before everything went down mid-October. I could not get myself into a very crowded classroom after that. Even this semester, even if things have gotten slightly better, I had to get an extenuating circumstances form from a counselor because I could barely go to class. I tried speaking about it to people, but the only person I feel really helped opening to was the counselor I met, Chelsea Stelmach, and even then, I had to back out of some of our meetings because I got so anxious that I had to run back home minutes before the appointment.
My plan for the future is fairly simple; I absolutely want to do feel better and I am taking the necessary measures for it. I am trying to distance myself from this toxic situation as much as I can and to be honest, since my last in person meeting with Chelsea, it has been a lot better, as I feel more relaxed and I understand my emotions more with the tips I now have. This semester has also been much better than the first one, because I took an online course and I was in other courses with friends who actually understand my problem, so I didn¿¿t feel judged and I felt more in control, even if I still had my challenges with big crowds, especially to write midterms. For the following semesters, I will enroll more in online courses and I will also keep some in person ones, to fight the need to always be home by myself. I am following some therapy programs and I am intensively working on TAO, and I feel like I will be able to overcome my problems by next semester.
Thank you for your time.
