Submit an Academic Petition or Appeal

Petition Letter: Dear Associate Dean (Academic),

I am appealing to re-enroll in DEVS100B-700 for student number 20192128.

I dropped this class on February 24 due to extenuating circumstances that lasted from January 27 to March 24. I contacted the course professor, Mr. Scott Rutherford, on February 24th to let him know of the decision. I also inquired about an offer to give me an IN mark for the course to accommodate these circumstances and allow me to complete the outstanding coursework during the summer. I then attempted to re-enroll in DEVS100B-700 multiple times in March through Solus but was unable to do so myself from the portal. At the time, I was not aware that officially dropping the course was an irreversible decision in Solus.

On March 24, I contacted the Arts & Sciences Online department by email requesting to re-enroll in the course. I was informed that they would not be able to re-enroll me in DEVS100B-700 since the request came approximately 1 month after dropping the course. The reason I did not request to be re-enrolled until one month later is because the extenuating circumstances were unmanageable during that period and were rectified when I contacted the department about re-enrollment. Furthermore, Mr. Scott Rutherford inquired whether the dropped course could be rectified at the department level at the end of April but was advised that I would need to appeal to the Faculty of Arts and Sciences. I was informed of the need to appeal the decision on April 27 which is why this appeal is being submitted to you at this time.

The professor, Mr. Scott Rutherford, has agreed to let me re-enroll in the course with an IN and complete the remaining coursework over the summer but the appeal must first be granted to allow me to add back the course. I will need to complete the research paper, case study and final exam within the next few months and I am wholly capable of completing this work well during the summer. As you can see from my track record with Queen's so far, I have an approximate 3.6 GPA in my other courses. I was also performing well in the course prior to this with my assignments being graded as follows:
Term Paper: B
Midterm Exam: A-
Theories of Development: A-

I am highly motivated to complete my Bachelor of Arts in Global Development Studies through the Queen's Arts & Sciences Online track and this course is a prerequisite to many of the other courses I will need to take in the fall. WIthout completing the course, my ability to complete the degree could be pushed back by more than one year.

I would be extremely grateful for the opportunity to re-enroll in DEVS100B-700 and to have the opportunity to complete the remaining coursework this summer. I have already paid for the course and I am highly motivated to complete it in a timely manner.
