Submit an Academic Petition or Appeal

I am writing to ask permission for an Aegrotat Standing in PHIL 497 based on the arrangements discussed with Professor Kymlicka. He has supported this request and has given me the option to dismiss two assignments and construct my final mark based on the final essay and the three assignments that I have already submitted throughout the term. I have provided him with documentation from my counsellor at La Salle, however I understand that I need to write an appeal as well explaining the situation that has led me to this accommodation.

Last year, at the end of the term I had a very bad accident which led me to hospitalization and a two month recovery. It happened late November, a week before exam period, so I had to defer all of my exams. Since 4 of my exams we worth over 40, I did not have to option to appeal for an aegrotat standing. Due to my condition and the medication I was on throughout my recovery process, I was unable to study over the holidays, and the department had left it up to me to decide when I felt comfortable writing my exams. Since then, I was able to complete 2 out of the 4 but still have 2 more to write. Throughout this semester, I have tried my hardest to keep up with my course load while factoring in time to study for my outstanding exams, but I found myself putting off the latter because I did not want it to affect my marks for this term. I decided to try and schedule my last two exams but started feeling very overwhelmed and faced difficulty studying for 2 courses that I have not focused on in a year on top of my exams for this term.

I got to the point where I was not feeling okay mentally. I did not communicate my stress levels with anyone all semester, nor was I able to go home and clear my head for over 3 months. I let it build up to the point where it was not only affecting my academics, but my health as well. I was finally able to go home the week before exams and Professor Kymlicka and Deborah Knight have been very helpful and understanding throughout this process and suggested I go see a counsellor to talk to someone. I will admit it did really help me out and we came up with a plan moving forward so I can avoid getting to that point again in the future.

The reason I am submitting this appeal so late is because I was under the impression that all I needed to do was provide my professor with the documents from the counsellor and the arrangements made would be put into effect, but I believe there was some sort of miscommunication over email. I will attach the electronic copy of the documents from my counsellor.
