Petition Letter

Petition Letter: To Whom it May Concern,

My name is Laurenio Sousa, my student number is 20121897. I am submitting an academic appeal because of extenuating medical circumstances for the 2018 fall and 2019 winter terms. I would like to drop the following courses:

-DRAM 100
-ECON 110
-PSYC 100

I would also like to change the following course to credit standing:

-GPHY 101

The reason behind the appeal for these courses is because of two separate concussions that I had withstood as a member of the Gaels Football team, which had a drastic effect on my academics. My initial concussion, according to my medical records took place on September 10th 2018 and had an immediate impact on my ability to preform academically. I constantly had issues with my concentration and memory due to my injuries and found it often very difficult to even make it to class most days. I was not officially cleared from this concussion until January 8th 2019. I then had the misfortune of being concussed a second time, according to my medical record this took place on March 15th 2019. I had the same two issues of memory and focus, however this time my mental health took a very large hit. I found myself struggling to get out of bed, even on days where my head had not been bothering me otherwise. Once again, I struggled doing assignments in every class I was enrolled in and more often than not struggled to be physically present to classes due to my condition. I was not cleared from this second concussion until June 7th 2019, my last exam was April 20th 2019. I do not feel that my current GPA is an accurate representation of my academic ability and I feel that my concussions were a direct cause of this. I am asking for a second chance as I believe that what happened to me in my first year was out of my control.

Thank you,

Laurenio Sousa
