Petition Letter

Petition Letter: Hello,
My name is Hayley McNorton and I am making an appeal because of the circumstances of my situation that did not allow me to add a course within the add/drop period.

I am a fourth year student and I want to graduate this spring. In order to do that I applied to graduate before the Christmas break. To make sure that I had the courses to graduate I checked that I had all of my required courses to do so.

On Friday January 16th, which was two weeks after we got back from the holidays, the last day of the add/drop period, and approximately three weeks after I applied to graduate, I got an email from Arts & Science stating that I would not be able to graduate because I was missing 3.0 units. Other than being notified on the last day of the add/drop period, I was notified late in the day (approximately 14:30 pm). Because I was travelling during this time, and consequently did not have access to the internet, I did not receive this email until the Arts & Science department was closed for the weekend. If I was notified earlier on, I would have been able to add a class to fill my requirements within the appropriate add drop period.

On Monday I emailed the Arts& Science department in order to rectify the situation, since I was under the impression that I had all my required courses. They told me my only course of action was to meet with a academic adviser, which I did the following day. My adviser notified me that usually the Arts & Science department would have got back to me earlier since I applied before the break. Because of the circumstances of my situation, including the time and date I was notified, there was no way that I would have been able to add or drop a course in the appropriate add/drop period. It is for this reason that I am appealing to add a course and requesting that the payment I make for this appeal be refunded, as there was no way I could have avoided this situation.

Thank you for your time and I look forward to hearing from you,
Hayley McNorton.
