Dear Associate Dean:
I am appealing to drop FREN 106 (Summer 2020). This spring and summer were very challenging for me and my two children with all of the changes, isolation, and quarantine. I had been taking two classes and was doing well in both, however as the workload intensified I knew I was falling behind in my comprehension of the material and I could not meet the needs of my children in our situation and meet the requirements for both classes. I emailed Arts and Science Registration about dropping FREN 106 and was told that it would be fine other than the financial penalty. I was willing to make that sacrifice knowing I would be able to give my children what they needed and concentrate on doing well in my one class. I informed my classmates that would have been my upcoming group members that I was dropping the class and I ceased work in FREN 106, focusing on my other class. I attempted to drop the class through SOLUS and received a message that it may take up to a week to show that I had dropped it. After a little over a week I attempted to drop it again and received a message that I could no longer drop the class through SOLUS. I emailed Arts and Science Registration back and was told I needed to write an appeal after I received my grade in the class.
The reason I chose to drop FREN 106 and not PSYC 271, Brain and Behaviour was because PSYC 271 was a very intense class for me and I was doing well and knew I would not be able to spend the additional hours it was taking me during upcoming semesters when I would be taking more classes. Also, I am working towards a BA in Psychology, so PSYC 271 is indirect alignment with this goal.
I would like to complete FREN 106 this Fall term. I was doing well in the class and enjoying it, and I would really like to learn to speak French. My youngest son is taking grade eight French immersion and I feel like me learning French would also help support his learning.
Please contact me with any additional questions you may have.
Regards,
Jennifer Hamilton
