Petition Letter: To whom it may concern,
I would like to request an aegrotat standing grade for PHGY 215. Due to extenuating circumstances, I was unable to write the final exam, but I completed and did very well in all other course work. I was diagnosed with an autoimmune disease called Ankylosing Spondylitis. Which encompasses an array of symptoms including severe joint pain and stiffness, fatigue, and chest pain. To control these symptoms, I was taking an immunosuppressant drug called Humira. Since it suppresses the immune system it makes you highly susceptible to infections. During the time of the final exam, I had caught the flu and developed an ear infection. Being on the medication made everything exponentially worse. It caused my disease to severely flare up which in turn caused overall inflammation of my joints. I was taken to my doctor and rheumatologist and prescribed adequate medicine and taken off Humira while the infection subsided. I was completely unable to study or even do much of anything else. This infection went on into the following winter term, lasting almost a total of four months because of my weakened immune system. For this reason, I also dropped most of my courses that semester. What prevented me from appealing from the time the course finished until the present day is that I am still going through the same symptoms at a different degree. Due to COVID-19, I have once again been taken off of my medication because it is an immunosuppressant. As a result of this, my disease is not properly controlled and continuously flaring up. I am currently working with my doctors to get on a new medication. I will also be making personal adjustments to succeed in my future studies which includes taking a lighter course load. I truly enjoyed taking Physiology 215 and I do feel that all of my assessment grades reflect that. I am sincerely requesting a review of my grade with consideration of these extenuating circumstances. Thank you for taking the time to review my appeal.
