Petition Letter: Dear Associate Dean of Studies,
I am appealing to drop The Cold War (HIST 211) from the Winter 2020 term. In this
letter, I will detail a timeline of my extenuating circumstances that provide reason for this appeal.
I was unable to complete this appeal within the specified timeline due to the ongoing
nature of my extenuating circumstances. In this course, I was not able to complete the final
examination. To accommodate this, Professor Trofimov kindly offered me an Incomplete (IN)
grade and the opportunity to complete the final examination before August 31st, 2020. My
extenuating circumstances persisted throughout the Summer 2020 term, though I made multiple
attempts to work on the final examination throughout this period until the end of August. With the
intention to complete this course work before the end of the subsequent term, I did not appeal to
drop the course before this deadline. This extenuating circumstances has persisted into the Fall 2020 term, though has become more manageable at times, such that I now have the capacity to appeal for this course.
The pandemic forced me to relocate to my family home from March to August of 2020.
My familial relations caused me significant distress, such that I was largely unable to
complete academic activities. This circumstance either caused or exacerbated a major depressive episode, with some symptoms starting in the Winter 2020 term. I used unpredictable moments of good health to focus on a course of the Summer 2020 term with an urgent deadline. In the Winter 2020 term, I was able to complete some courses in a timely manner for the same reason that I narrowed my focus in my days of better health. Some symptoms include extreme irregularity in sleep patterns and an inability to focus, though my psychologist, Dr. Lead Todd, has provided a letter to detail this circumstance and its effect on my academics further. I was able to leave my family home on August 15th, though remained in poor health for an extended period of time.
As mentioned, my extenuating circumstances persisted throughout the Summer 2020
term and further impacted the courses of that term. The professors of Canada from
Conquest to Present (HIST 260), Contemporary China (HIST 270), Ordinary Differential
Equations (MATH 225), and Marcoeconomic Policy (ECON 223) of the Summer 2020 term have
granted me permission to complete any outstanding course work by the end of this term. I continue to work with Queen's Student Accessibility Services to support my wellbeing, and I regularly see a psychologist to manage my mental health. Though I continue to experience symptoms of a major depressive episode, with the right accommodations, I have been able to successfully complete the majority of my course work.

Appeal Letter: As you have indicated and at this time, I would like to pursue my request to have an Incomplete grade in the Cold War (HIST 211) course, though I am not sure how to proceed. My completion of the courses from my Summer 2021 term was a contigency for the approval of Dr. Atkinson, however the work that I submitted for the Introduction to International Security (POLS 263) course was not being accepted by the professor for the reason that he no longer maintains a record of it, and therefore was unable to advise that an Incomplete grade was a suitable option. This is something that I am seeking to resolve, though I understand that this conflicts with our original argreement. As well, as it was made clear that this condition upon my Summer 2021 term was put in place to determine whether I am fit to finish the requirements of the Cold War (HIST 211) course, I completed the final examination in advance with the permission of Professor Trofimov, thereby leaving only an official submission for me to complete should Dr. Atkinson grant the approval of my appeal to the Associate Dean level. Professor Trofimov has been incredibly supportive and offered his continued support of my request for an Incomplete grade. I would be interested in completing the course under the consideration of the circumstances that I outlined in this email.
I understand and empathize that the length of this appeal process may be frustrating to you and your team, as I have shared in this experience too, though I have tried my best to manage this among my other responsibilities without comprimising my need to advocate for myself through this channel. Although I would prefer a discussion about the constraints that I have outlined, in the event that this appeal is directed to the Board of Studies, please consider this as my appeal letter.
