Submit an Academic Petition or Appeal

Petition Letter: This year has been incredibly trying on me and my family. I have lost two grandmothers between October and February and have been struggling severely with depression and anxiety throughout this time on top of adjusting to university. The death of my grandmother in October drastically effected my academic performance, I was unable to complete any work for months while grieving. Following her death my mental health was extremely bad, I could barely participate in everyday routines such as eating or getting dressed, let alone my academics. I did seek out help and I began seeing a therapist and my doctor has placed me on medication, this however was not without trial. Over the past 3 months I've had numerous doctor's appointments, bloodwork, and electrocardiograms as well as a medication I was placed on for a month that gave me very bad side effects. All of this also played a role in my ability to focus on my academics and I have more appointments lined up in the next few weeks. I've failed two courses and have made the plans to retake them in the summer and fall but the area I've struggled most with throughout this time is Chemistry. I would have dropped the course sooner, but I thought I'd be able to improve my grade this term. However, my grandmother died in late February and her funeral was the day after the drop deadline. Due to the effect that these events have had on my academics in the past, I believe that dropping the course is the best option pending you approve my appeal for an extended drop date.
