Petition Letter: To whom it may concern,
My name is Elijah Han, I am a second-year student currently pursuing a major in Political Studies. I am writing a letter now in hopes of being granted the ability to drop a course past the March 5th deadline for Women, Gender, and Politics or POLS 280. This year has been very tough overall. Going into this year I felt my mental health declining due to a variety of reasons, but I was determined to get through the year regardless. I managed to finish first semester, but I was extremely burnt out. Having dropped a course before the deadline at the beginning of the year because of little interest, I was behind a class for this year. When I was choosing courses at the beginning of second semester, I knew that taking five politics courses would keep me more on track for my major as I only took three during the first semester. The class was full, so I emailed the professor to see about getting and after remaining on the wait list I got in. However, this was a poor choice on my part as my wish to finish the year stronger was overpowered by the poor condition I was in going into second semester. Truthfully, my mental health was affecting my ability to just take care of my self day to day which extended to my school life. While struggling in all my classes my performance in 280 was worse than the other classes. Around the end of March/beginning of April my mental state improved enough for me to begin helping myself mentally and academically. The reason why I did not drop before the deadline was because quite frankly by the time I was starting to see more clearly and found some motivation I had just missed the deadline to drop 280 and my grade was horrendous. On top of POLS 280 I had four other POLS courses I had to catch up in. I contacted professors and completed my assignments but by the time I was done with my other classes I realized there was no way of me passing 280. So, I emailed my professor asking for the possibilities of extra credit and dropping the course. I told her of my poor mental state and explained my situation this year. She was kind and empathetic in her response but said there was no extra credit built into the course I may very well need to drop the class, which is why I began the appeal process. I ask now to be granted the ability to drop POLS 280 late, as I feel my poor mental health prevented me from showcasing my academic ability in the course. By the time I got the help I needed it was both too late to drop and to pass the course. In the future I am determined to seek out help as soon as possible and be more vigilant in maintaining a healthy state of mind.
Sincerely,
Elijah Han
