Petition Letter: 21 January 2015

Dear Associate Dean,

I am contacting you in hope to waive the 21 day appeal, unfortunately since January of 2014 my depression has become sever, and it has impacted my sleep, focus, motivation, alimentation and aggravated my arthritis. This impacted my ability to attend and focus in classes, submit and complete work in a timely manner and seek help.

During winter term 2014, I was functioning at a very low level, seeing a counselor helped me scrape by, but when the term ended and I had no support, daily functions became seemingly insurmountable. I was not in a place to do the necessary research in order to discover that there was a twenty-one day deadline nor was I ready to confront the circumstance of my downfalls. The effects of my debilitating depression, have led to vitamin deficiencies, causing low energy and made finding motivation ever more difficult. Trying to manage my mood disorder on my own landed me in emergency room at the beginning of November. Shortly after is when I admitted to the severity of my emotional condition and sought out help. After working with many healthcare professionals, I am only now at a place that I can reflect on my own short fallings and am fully committing to taking care of my academics and myself.

Despite great efforts, I am still struggling with my depression and trying not to let it affect all aspects of my life. Writing this appeal has been very difficult, however it is a first step into planning my academic future. I know that overcoming depression will take time and I have to be patient and hope that the school can be patient with me as well. I have the ability to achieve more than what my GPA says of me and I hope to prove it.

Sincerely,

Sieglinde Busch

Petition Letter

Petition Letter: 24 April 2015

Dear Associate Dean,

I am contacting you in hope to change my grades to credit in LING 100 and PSYC 100, in addition to either dropping or getting Aegrotat standing for PHIL 257. Unfortunately in January of 2014 I developed a sever depression, and it has impacted my sleep, focus, motivation, alimentation and aggravated my arthritis. This impacted my ability to attend and focus in classes, complete work in a timely manner and seek help. Throughout the term I attempted to stay on track by dropping my sixth course, discussing accommodations with my professors and attending counseling through HCDS. I had made great strides in the past year and attended almost every class and tried to open up a dialogue with my Professors. Nonetheless, the effects of my low mood had strongly affected my physical health, which limited my energy and attention span. My academic performance directly correlated with the lows of my mood. I managed some small success in every course, yet I struggled with devoting energy to the courses that needed the most attention. Fighting with feelings of hopelessness made trying to catch up in PHIL 257 seemingly impossible, in addition to staying on top of assignments. The stress of daily functions had become so high, I became easily overwhelmed with all tasks and could not meet the academic demands.

I have been struggling to stay a float for a long time, I have been working with Queen¿¿s Academic Advising, Health Services, a rheumatologist, Counseling and my Professors in order to manage the detrimental effects that my depression have had on my life and could have on my future. Despite great efforts, I am still struggling with my depression and trying not to let it affect all aspects of my life. Writing this letter has been a great struggle for my condition is not stagnate, as this letter presents it as, in addition I am yet to see a great difference in my mood. I am still struggling with my depression, and the loss of a childhood friend to depression the same time I heard back from the 21 day Appeal, which is why it has taken me so long to write this letter. It is exceptionally difficult to put ones greatest struggles on paper and hope that someone sees academic merit beyond circumstantial downfalls. I had hope to make large improvements academically this year with my new health plan and unfortunately have not, which is why it is difficult to ask someone for assistance seeing as the problem is ongoing. Nevertheless, I am still trying to use every resource to try and turn things around, including meeting with a psychiatrist. My academic plan for the upcoming year is to graduate in five years taking three courses per year, and if my health does not improve after fall 2015, I will be taking time away from school to better care for myself. I know that overcoming depression will take time and I have to be patient and hope that the school can see that I do not wish for this to be a reoccurring issue although it is. I would like to apologize for the lengthiness and the delay to this letter and understand that I have missed the deadline once again and that it is possible that the acceptance of this later is no longer valid. Thank you for your time.

Sincerely,

Sieglinde Busch
