Petition Letter

Petition Letter: To the Associate Dean of Studies,

I am requesting to appeal ECON 250 and ECON222 because of the domestic problems I was facing that directly affected my academic performance in the 2021 winter term.

At the beginning of March, my sister Fatema began showing a lack of competence to care for herself. During March and the first three weeks of April, multiple events happened that made it apparent to my other sister, Zainab, and me that she was suffering from a mental disorder, though we could not pinpoint what it was nor could we get her to admit that anything was wrong. My immigrant parents who are unaware of the severity of mental health, were not understanding and unable to do anything so Zainab and I had to step in and take charge. Since Fatema is over 18, there was not much we could do except deal with her episodes. After weeks of running around to deal with the countless outbursts from Fatema and having to clean up the aftermath of it all, it was suggested by a police officer that had been in touch with us throughout all of the events, that we obtain a Form 2 from the Ministry of Health and Court of Justice. With the form, we were able to legally take Fatema into custody for examination by a psychiatrist. She is now in a mental hospital and has been diagnosed with mania and psychosis.

This affected me for about 7-8 weeks. Not only did it take up most of my time but it also took a huge toll on my mental health and wellbeing. Throughout the domestic problems that I was facing, I tried my best to pass the classes that I could, but with ECON250 and ECON222, I was unable to give the time and focus that was required of me.

I left out the details of the events that took place due to personal reasons but if it will help with the process then I may be able to include it later on.

Sincerely,
Rukaiya Diwan
