New Information: Addentum regarding Winter 2014 courses:
As the Winter semester of last year came to an end, my intention was to appeal to drop the courses I was failing. My counselor at the HCDS encouraged this in light of the problems I had been facing. I prepared a letter of appeal and received written support from the counselor while living at home in the weeks following my final exam. During this period, I began to feel better as my drug use receded and I had the constant support and comfort of my family. When I returned to Kingston for work (nearing the end of the 21-day appeal period) I was managing the issues which had caused me trouble in school more successfully than ever. This gave me the sense that I was not an appropriate candidate for appeal as my issues were of my own creation and were within my power to overcome. With this mindset, I chose not to submit my letter.
My experience in the Fall 2014 semester has taught me that serious problems with addiction are not so easily beaten. It is a constant process, requiring determination and persistsnce. Six weeks into this final semester I am doing better than ever, but I know that I cannot let up. Although I still do not feel like an ideal candidate for appeal due to my individual responsibility for my difficulties in school, I know the grades I recieved last year are not representative of my ability or my passion. A second chance to appeal them would be much appreciated.
