Submit an Academic Petition or Appeal

Petition Letter: I am appealing to late drop MATH 221 (F2020), and STAT 269 and PHIL 330 (W2021). I am appealing to drop these courses and the subsequent requirement to withdrawal. You will look at my academic record and you will wonder two things: is this person capable of achieving their degree and do they deserve this appeal. In my academic record, you will see a previous appeal, and a host of failures and drops. I can only ask you whether someone deserves to be evaluated on the work they didn¿¿t do and the life circumstances that got in the way or whether they deserve a real opportunity to learn and to have their work evaluated.
At the beginning of 2020, I got very sick and dropped out of school. I have a strong desire to do well and to complete my degree. So, when I returned to school in the fall of 2020, I took a reduced course load. Unfortunately, in November 2020, after the drop deadline, I experienced some medical complications and subsequently failed MATH 221. I had a similar experience in Winter 2021 semester. I was faced with an increased number of medical tests in the second half of the semester, and this lead to me dropping the course in which I was doing the worst. I then proceeded to struggle with some changes in medication which ultimately led to my failures in both STAT 269 and PHIL 330.
When I dropped in the Winter of 2020, I went to every campus office I could to prevent it. I was told that there was no place for me, and no help for me. I couldn¿¿t use the temporary illness form because we didn¿¿t know when it would pass, and I couldn¿¿t get disability services to help me because as far as we knew it wasn¿¿t a permanent disability. I cried in multiple offices across campus and I let other people convince me that I didn¿¿t deserve an education because I was sick in an undetermined way. I was too sick to fight it, and there was no way I was going to do well even if I could. I let myself believe the same this past year, and it was partially true.
I am presently booked to see the Occupational Therapist on campus, I¿¿ve submitted paperwork to disability services to address the issues I¿¿ve been struggling with, and I intend to take no more than one course until I am confident I can do more and still succeed, I have plans to visit Academic Advising to make sure that I¿¿m taking the best route forward. I¿¿ve worked extensively this past year with the doctors in Student Wellness and the greater Kingston community so that my health is stabilizing more and more. I¿¿ve put in the effort and I¿¿m putting in the effort to make sure I can complete a degree. No one should be judged on an uncontrollable illness, please don¿¿t let mine determine my education.
