Petition Letter
Petition Letter: I am submitting a request for two different appeals (late drop, and extension of IN grade) as the circumstances which I have had to navigate over the last two terms have had a significant impact on my ability to complete work. In the winter term of this year I received two diagnoses related to my mental health that directly impact my ability to function. Facing depression and anxiety, I was unable to attend some classes, would find myself unable to work for multiple days at a time, and my ability to complete work was limited as I spent most of my days simply trying to get by. I was able to complete two of my courses, but my grades were very much affected. Going into the summer term, I had been given a new prescription to deal with these issues, and was continuing to see my psychotherapist, so I believed I would be able to finish DEVS 293 while also taking on two summer courses to make up for the lightened course load I had to take during the year.
Unfortunately during the summer term, I received another permanent disability diagnosis for ADHD, which directly impacts my cognitive functioning and ability to focus and complete work. Despite my desire to complete the outstanding work for my courses, I was often unable to sit down and focus for any amount of time due to my constant executive dysfunction. I was able to finish one of my summer term courses, with a much lower mark than I am used to, but had to request an IN status for yet another course. Throughout the 4 summer months, I received this diagnosis, and then had to spend time with my doctor to figure out which medication and what dosage would allow me to function at a level in which I may continue to participate in school, which took some time. Along with the weekly sessions I had with my psychotherapist, and the medication which we decided on, I have found a balance that I believe will allow me to complete this final course, and set me up for success in the upcoming school year.
On top of working two jobs in order to be able to finance my upcoming school year, I had a very large difficulty being able to finish these courses. I have reached the point where I will not be able to complete DEVS 293, as the unfinished course work is so significant I will not be able to work on it throughout the upcoming term in addition to my new courses. Additionally, I am requesting an extension of my IN for MUSC 171, as the incomplete course work for this class is not as significant, and I am making good progress on completing it.
I have created a schedule for completing the final work in MUSC 171, finishing my final project and final exam pieces by the beginning of the upcoming term (Sept. 7th). The rest of the work I hope to have done by Sept. 20th at the latest, so that my completion of this course does not greatly impact the work I must do for my new courses.
